What Happened to Cass McBride? by Gail Giles is a fast-paced psychological thriller with elements of horror. After Cass is placed in a coffin and buried alive, she’s forced to use her powers of persuasion to talk her captor into releasing her.
From the publisher:
Kyle Kirby has planned a cruel and unusual revenge on Cass McBride, the most popular girl in school, for the death of his brother David. He digs a hole. Kidnaps Cass. Puts her in a box – underground.
He buries her alive.
But lying in the deepest dark, Cass finds a weapon: she uses the power of words to keep her nemesis talking–and herself breathing–during the most harrowing 48 hours of her life.
What Happened to Cass McBride? is told through three POV characters: Kyle, being held by police for questioning in the present; Cass, at some point in the recent past, underground; and police detective Ben, searching for Cass in the hours after she’s reported missing. It’s a quick read at just over 200 pages, and the short chapters and fast pace at which events unfold makes it feel even shorter.
Through the conversation between Kyle and Cass, we learn how their relationships with their parents have influenced who they have become as young adults. As they become increasingly self-aware, they’re provided the opportunity to change.
It’s unusual for young adult novels to feature an adult POV, but in What Happened to Cass McBride? Ben is a relatively new officer. His chapters are primarily used to demonstrate what Cass’s classmates think of her. They’re used to provide more depth to Cass’s character rather than reveal much about Ben.
What Happened to Cass McBride? is a fast-paced, eerie and fun psychological thriller which you’ll find difficult to put down until you finish the whole book.
